Background

IDEA Data Solutions (IDEA) develops ERP software specifically designed for superyachts and superyacht management companies. Superyachts operate much like small businesses, with some vessels supporting crews of up to 80 people. IDEA’s solutions ensure every aspect of yacht operations runs smoothly, allowing owners to depart or charter their vessels at a moment’s notice.

IDEA was founded in 1999 by Sebastian and Klaus Allebrodt. While managing the refit facility in Palma de Mallorca, Klaus Allebrodt identified that superyachts had unique operational requirements not addressed by existing systems. At the time, crews were provided with large volumes of printed manuals after a vessel was delivered, leaving employees to manually search through technical specifications to find critical information.

IDEA’s software transformed how information was accessed and managed onboard. The platform covers spare parts and inventory management, International Safety Management (ISM) compliance and certification, designated persons ashore (DPA) workforce management, as well as quality, technical, and crew management - all tailored specifically to the superyacht environment.

Early acquisition and growing pains

In 2008, IDEA was acquired by the SpecTec Group, then the leading marine software provider. Sebastian and Klaus believed that joining a larger organization would improve operational efficiency and fuel growth. However, when SpecTec leadership expanded IDEA’s mandate to include commercial vessels across the German and Swiss markets, it became increasingly difficult to invest in IDEA’s core superyacht business.

As IDEA was integrated into the broader organization, the founders quickly realized that the distinct needs of superyachts were no longer being adequately served. Innovation slowed, and development decisions were increasingly driven by priorities outside IDEA’s core market

Renewed focus, newfound freedom

In 2014, Omegro acquired the SpecTec Group. During its financial analysis, Omegro leadership identified IDEA as a disciplined and highly efficient business unit. Since the original acquisition, IDEA had grown from five employees to 21, but a disproportionate amount of resources were being spent supporting segments outside its core superyacht market.

Recognizing this imbalance, Omegro made the decision to carve IDEA out of the broader SpecTec Group and refocus the business exclusively on superyacht customers. The carve-out was completed in 2018, and IDEA has continued to grow steadily ever since. The company successfully navigated the pandemic period from 2019 to 2022 while still achieving average double-digit year-over-year growth

‍“Omegro knows how to look for an opportunity and if a company is worth acquiring just by looking at their numbers. They know what success looks like and leave us in control of our own entrepreneurship and ideas.” - Christian Mühle, CEO, IDEA Data Solutions

Life at IDEA after the Omegro acquisition

Following the carve-out, IDEA continued its growth trajectory by applying Omegro best practices across product development, professional services, and customer care. The team restructured its software architecture, removed outdated elements from the legacy framework, and refocused efforts on serving existing customers and leveraging established multipliers in the market.

IDEA employees also gained direct access to Omegro’s talent development resources. This included connections with like-minded CEOs and participation in conferences designed to share strategies around planning, product development, and sales execution

“I can find anyone in Omegro that can help me answer any questions I have to help us with our success.” - Christian Mühle, CEO, IDEA Data Solutions
